Welcome
Coolawang Border Leicesters is run by Coolawang Pastoral Company proprietors Trevor, Judy and Lachie James. The farming property is situated 25km south west of Mundulla in South Australia.
The sheep enterprise is based around a self-replacing merino flock. The older merino ewes are mated to Border Leicesters. The Border Leicester x Merino ewes are sold as one & a half year olds at the Naracoorte Border Leicester x Merino off shears sale in November.
The James family began breeding and selling the 1st cross ewes in the late 1970s and in 1980 started the Border Leicester Stud. In the years since both enterprises have achieved high levels of success with many sale records.
Coolawang Border Leicesters have sold sheep into five Australian states as well as the genetics playing an important role in producing our 1st cross ewes.
At Coolawang we endeavour to maintain the health of our flock at a high level with particular attention to the property biosecurity. In 2001 Coolawang entered the OJD Market Assurance Program and currently has a status of MN3V. This gives our clients both stud and commercial the best possible assurance we can provide.
AI programs are the main method of introducing new genetics into our sheep breeding program which also assists in maintaining the property health status.'
Some ewes are retained and are mated to Poll Dorset rams.
The wether portion are finished on grain and sold as heavy weights.
The James family has been breeding first cross ewes for over 30 years.
